Overview:

Audi is one of the few automobile manufacturers that continues to refine the station wagon. Their 2008 A6 Avant, a sophisticated luxury sport wagon, continues the full makeover started in 2006.

A 3.2-liter, drive-by-wire, direct-injected V6 that produces 255 hp and 243 pound-feet of torque motivates this 4,211-pound wagon. Paired with Audi's excellent six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, the big wagon can accomplish the 0-60 stroll in 7.3 seconds. It's electronically governed to a top speed of 130 mph, and Audi gives gas mileage as 19/27 mpg city/highway. Power flows to all four wheels via Audi's famed Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system that's coupled to their excellent Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

Braking and steering are equally endowed with the same high level of technology. Audi's Servotronic steering is a speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion system that gives good road feedback at all speeds. The braking system is tied in with the ESP program, ABS, and electronic brakeforce distribution to provide carefully modulated braking under all conditions.

Forbes characterizes the ride as "supple, yet taut" and "bank-vault silent." Other reviewers enthuse over the wagon's ability to isolate passengers from road irregularities while still providing a highly satisfying run through the twisties. All fingers point to the Audi Quattro system for providing tenacious grip with "agility and responsiveness," no matter the weather conditions. Besides its suspension systems, Audi is probably most admired for its state-of-the-art automobile interiors. All reviewers agree the new A6 Avant lives up to those expectations. Leather, aluminum, and wood are liberally but tastefully applied to the various interior surfaces. The front seats are supportive, with 12-way power driver's and passenger side adjustment (including four-way lumbar) and adjustable head restraints.

While some reviewers feel the interior comfortably sits five, Forbes complains that the center passenger in the back might feel cramped. That reviewer was also unhappy with the arrangement of the dashboard and the "sheer number of switches," which look like "a jet plane's cockpit." Audi, along with other German automakers, has tried to simplify things with an "all-in-one" control. Their MMI (Multi-Media Interface) controls the navigation (an option), audio, and climate control systems. While not as poorly reviewed as BMW's iDrive system, most reviewers are not fond of these "simplified" control systems.

Behind its rear seats, the A6 Avant has 33.93 cubic feet of cargo space, which is considered very good for its class (it's close to the capacity of the larger and heaver Volkswagen Touareg SUV). Audi provides two securing rails to lock loads in safely, a luggage net, and a retractable floor with a large cargo tray under it.

The A6 Avant is well equipped with safety features. In addition to the Quattro system and its linked ESP stability system and electronic braking systems, standard equipment also includes a tire pressure monitoring system and a full compliment of airbags. History of the Audi A6 Avant

[Edit] From the beginning, Audi has focused on superior performance through technological advancements developed in its Ingolstadt, Germany lab.  A combination of German practicality with a taste for European elegance imbues all Audi cars, and the Audi A6 Avant is no exception.

Based on the four-door A6, Audi's mid-sized luxury sedan, the Avant offers a little more cargo room and versatility for those seeking a family car or just extra storage space.  Even though it is essentially a station wagon, it does not sacrifice comfort, performance, or high-end features.  Leather seats, trip computer, memory settings, power adjustable seats and dual climate control are not your typical wagon accessories.  A 255-hp engine adds some pep to the driving experience, along with the now-famous and much-praised quattro all-wheel drive system.  Safety is a primary concern, and the Avant, like the A6 sedan, comes standard with ABS brakes, traction control, an electronic stability program, and multiple airbags.

Though the A6 Avant was overshadowed by the appearance of the allroad quattro in 2001 and discontinued briefly in 2005, it makes its return with the updated exterior styling (wide-mouthed grille) of the A6 sedans and a new sports performance package.

The Avant remains a good choice for those wanting the style and elegance that goes with the Audi name, but also the practicality of a family wagon.  The Avant gives drivers car-like handling with storage versatility, and does it all so sumptuously that you may forget you're hauling groceries in the backseat.
