Lexus LX 570 History

Introduced in 2008 as a replacement for the LX 470 in the Lexus lineup, the LX 570 represents the third generation of the automaker's big LX SUV, which made its first appearance as the LX 450 in 1996.

As its name indicates, the LX 570 comes equipped with a more powerful engine, as well as a more luxurious interior and improved off-road capabilities. It also offers an increased towing capacity, now rated at 8,500 pounds, up from 6,500 pounds for the previous version.

Lexus has stretched the overall length of the LX 570 by four inches and widened it by an inch, perhaps in response to big competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and the Lincoln Navigator. The LX 570 has also packed on a few pounds, now tipping the scales at a not-so-svelt 5,995 pounds, up about 400 pounds from the previous version.

To move all that weight, Lexus has dropped a new 5.7-liter V8 engine under the LX 570's hood. The beefy V8 produces 383 horsepower, up from 268 horsepower for the previous year's LX. That's good enough to move the LX 570 from 0 to 60 in 7.4 seconds - not race car numbers but speedy enough for a full-size SUV.

After reducing some of the off-road capabilities in the LX 470, Lexus reversed itself and ensured that the LX 570 comes well-equipped for off-road driving. Features include a Hill-Start Assist Control system, which prevents the SUV from rolling backward on a slope when the driver switches between the brake and gas pedals. In addition, a Crawl Control feature manages acceleration and braking at low speeds over rough terrain, so the driver can concentrate on steering.

The big SUV's full-time four-wheel-drive system comes equipped with a Torsen limited-slip center differential, which automatically distributes power between the front and rear axles to improve traction on any surface. In addition, an advanced suspension system with Active Height Control automatically raises and lowers the LX 570 to improve aerodynamics at cruising speeds and ensure optimal height over rough terrain.

Exterior updates include a more aggressive grille, an integrated rear spoiler, 20-inch alloy wheels, a metallic-finish roof rack, and a power rear liftgate. Dual-swivel adaptive front headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also included.

Inside, the LX 570 seats eight passengers comfortably in three rows of leather-trimmed seating, including power-sliding second- and third-row seats, which can fold and stow away to provide additional cargo space.

Other interior features include walnut wood accents, a voice-activated navigation system with a backup camera, four-zone automatic climate control, a power tilt-and-slide moonroof, and a nine-speaker audio system with a six-disc CD changer.
