[Edit] Across the earth drives the Xterra, a true off-roading small SUV aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. The base X, S, and high-end SE trims all come in either rear-wheel or part-time four-wheel drive with both high- and low-range gear settings. A special Off-Road trim is available only in 4WD and features a stronger suspension. All 4WD models get mudguards and come standard with 16-inch or optional 17-inch wheels.
New for the 2008 Nissan Xterra are standard power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and remote entry for the base X trim, which previously offered a CD and air conditioning. An auto-dimming rearview mirror and temperature and compass display are now standard across the line, and the S trim receives step rails, a first aid kit, and a cargo net. Bluetooth, which is standard on the SE, is optional for all other trims. ABS brakes, dual front-side airbags, and traction and stability control are all standard.
Backed by a 4.0-liter, 265-hp V6 with a choice of 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission, the 2008 Nissan Xterra can carry up to 66 cubic feet of cargo with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats down. An optional folding front passenger seat adds more space. The cargo area is gear-oriented, with adjustable tracks and ten hooks. But the cargo capacity doesn't stop there. The standard roof rack features a lockbox, and with an optional tow package, the 2008 Xterra can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Though the top-of-the-line SE comes with luxuries such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and 6-CD changer, this SUV is more adventure than family oriented.
Owners love the Xterra's V6 power and acceleration (0-60 in 7.5 seconds), crisp handling, cargo versatility, and inexpensive pricetag compared to similar SUVs. A wide turning ratio, 16/22 mpg estimates, and difficult step-up access are some of the minor complaints.
