[Edit] The much restyled Pontiac lineup appeared in 2005 with the midsized G6 aimed at the Japanese lineup. The G6 builds upon GM's international Epsilon platform which also serves the Saab 9-3, Opel Veetra, and Chevy Malibu. There are few changes from the G6 2007 model year.
Pontiac offers a 164-hp, 2.4-liter I4 in the base model with several V6 variations the other trim lines. The GXP line features a 3.6-liter, 252-hp V6, the GT models come with a 3.5-liter, 219-hp V6, and the hardtop convertible gets a 3.9-liter, 222-hp V6. A four-speed automatic shifts the base model and the GT and GXP models get a six-speed automatic. Performance on the V6 was deemed adequate with good passing power on the 3.6-liter engine. Reviewers, however, found that the V6s don't match the sophistication of the Japanese imports. The base V6 sedan achieved an average 19.5 mpg, while a GXP coupe averaged 16.9 mpg in mostly city driving and a 3.5-liter GT convertible averaged 21.9 mpg in extended driving.
Handling was adequate, but still not up to Japanese import standards. There was some torque steer with the GXP performance oriented model. The G6 exhibited moderate body lean, but good grip in tight, fast turns. Wind noise is not as well managed as in an Accord or Camry.
Reviewers all found the interior comfortable and pleasant with good leg room in the back due to the G6's longer wheelbase. Sporty controls abound with red LED backlighting. Tilt/telescoping steering comes standard with power adjustable pedals optional. The coupe and convertible models, due to their rooflines, cut down on headroom in the rear. Trunk space is adequate, but minuscule in the convertible with the top down.
Standard safety features include driver and passenger front airbags with side-impact airbags and head curtain airbags for coupe and sedan models. All but the base model come with four-wheel disc ABS and traction control as standard. The traction control level depends on the trim level with the base model getting basic traction assist.

- This review details the G6 line-up, providing lots of detail on trim differences. Reviewer likes the automatic transmission, but not the steering, radio controls, or rear-seat headroom.... research.cars.com
