[Edit] Following an extensive redesign in 2007, the Toyota Camry four-door sedan received only minor updates for 2008. Long known as a major player in the midsize sedan market segment, the 2008 Camry comes in 11 trims, at four equipment levels - the standard Camry, the SE, the LE, and the XLE, as well as a Hybrid version, which was introduced in 2007.
All trims feature a standard 2.4-liter, 158-horsepower, four-cylinder engine linked to either a five-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. The SE, LE, and XLE trims are also available with a 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. The EPA rates mileage for the four-cylinder engine at 21 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway, while the V6 averages 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway.
The Camry Hybrid ups fuel efficiency to 33 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, thanks to its Hybrid Synergy Engine, which consists of a 147-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gas engine and a 40-horsepower electric motor. While idling or at speeds under 30 miles per hour, the electric motor provides power for the Camry Hybrid. The gas engine takes over during acceleration or when the driver requires greater performance.
The Camry Hybrid also comes equipped with a nickel-metal hydride battery, regenerative brakes, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT), and a hybrid suspension. In addition, a Hybrid-unique ECO Drive feature enables drivers to monitor and control the amount of energy used by the climate-control system, especially when the car is running on battery power.
Overall, drivers like the Camry's roomy interior, optional V6 engine, and Toyota's strong reputation for quality and reliability. However, with few improvements in features or power for 2008, the sedan has lost ground in the midsize marketplace, especially with its 158-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The Camry should retain its spot at the top, but it'll take some extra effort to stay there.
