[Edit] Ford expanded the Explorer lineup for 2008 to include no fewer than 12 configurations, including XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited versions, each of which can be equipped with optional four-wheel drive and a choice of V6 or V8 engine.
In addition, Ford Motor Company added a number of new features for 2008. The Explorer holds the honor as the first Ford vehicle with a new capless fuel filling system (available late in the model year), which opens and closes automatically when drivers insert or extract a fuel pump nozzle. It also provides a tighter seal than a typical gas cap, according to Ford.
New standard equipment for 2008 also includes Ford's Safety Canopy system, which consists of a rollover sensor and side curtain airbags. In addition, late in the 2008 model year, the Explorer will be available with a new technology option called Sync, a communications connectivity system that enables hands-free access to cell phones and MP3 players through the Explorer's audio system.
The 2008 Explorer also sports three new exterior colors, including Stone Green, Vapor Silver, and White Suede.
The 2008 Ford Explorer comes with either a 4.0-liter, single-overhead-cam V6 engine that produces 210 horsepower or an optional 4.6-liter V8 that generates 292 horsepower. Beyond that, standard features and options are varied and can be extensive, depending on the trim package.
No matter which Ford Explorer you get, it will guzzle gas. Also, Stephen Colbert has called the Explorer his favorite car a few times.
