In many ways, the 2007 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG could be considered the flagship model in the Mercedes AMG lineup, combining world-class design with pure power that pushes the limits of the sports luxury sedan. Based on the new S550 sedan, the S65 AMG receives a number of exterior body upgrades, a sportier interior, and a more powerful engine.
The heart of the S65 is its 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine that produces a whopping 612 horsepower. The 12-cylinder powerplant pushes the vehicle from 0 to 100 mph in just 4.4 seconds. It's linked to an AMG SpeedShift five-speed automatic transmission with shifter panels mounted on the steering wheel for easy access.
Exterior upgrades work in collaboration with the V12 engine. Large inlets and lateral outlets located in the front apron funnel air into and out of the engine, for example, while newly designed V12 tailpipes help shape the engine's visceral exhaust note. And new side skirts and a rear apron are designed to improve the S65's aerodynamics. Light yet strong 20-inch AMG light alloy wheels are designed to withstand the most demanding performance requirements.
Inside, AMG upgrades include leather sport seats with generous lateral support, an ergonomic multifunction steering wheel, sporty stainless steel pedals with non-slip black rubber pads, and an analogue clock on the dashboard.
Other features include an Active Body Control suspension, hydraulic dual-circuit brakes with brake booster and Brake Assist, and speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering.
Many drivers felt the S65's reputation as one of the world's top sports sedans was well-deserved, rating it among the best in performance, handling, and styling. In fact, some drivers felt it was almost too much of a good thing, and a few noted that the car's systems could be a bit complicated to operate. But few denied that the car was truly noteworthy.
