2007 Mercedes-Benz R500

From the side, the 2007 Mercedes-Benz R500 resembles a sporty station wagon, with an elongated wheel base, a sweptback roofline, four doors, and a tailgate (it's not called a hatchback on a Mercedes). Offically, Mercedes classifies the R500 as an SUV, but it's a crossover vehicle that combines the attributes of an SUV with the practicality and functionality of a station wagon, and even a luxury sedan.

It certainly handles like a sedan, thanks to an advanced power steering system, Airmatic semi-active suspension with an Adaptive Damping System, 4MATIC permanent four-wheel drive, four-wheel electronic traction control, and power-assisted disc brakes.

The R500 is powered by a 5.0-liter, double-overhead-cam V8 engine that produces 302 horsepower. It's linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission with a steering-column-mounted Direct Select shifter. Also included is the Touch Shift feature, which enables drivers to manually upshift or downshift using rocker buttons on the steering wheel.

Exterior features include a silver grille chrome ribs, dual chrome exhaust tips, five-spoke 18-inch wheels, and color-keyed bumpers.

Inside, features include an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Bird's-Eye Maple wood trim, electronic cruise control, power windows, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Options include a sunroof and leather seats.

The tailgate has an electrically assisted feature that gently closes it once it is set on the latch. The tailgate also has an electrically heated rear window and a rear window wiper with a washer.

For entertainment and communcations, the R500 is equipped with a modular COMAND Cockpit Management and Data system that integrates an LCD screen, an eight-speaker AM/FM stereo system, and a CD player, as well as an optional six-disc CD changer with MP3 capabilities, a navigation system, and Sirius satellite radio.

Drivers gave the R500 high marks for its uniqueness, as well as its handling, styling, comfort, and power. On the downside, some drivers noted the vehicle has blind spots out the back, while others noted it can be difficult to park because of its long wheel base.
