Crossover vehicles are all the rage these days in the automotive world, and if you take a look at the Mercedes-Benz R350, you can see why. It combines the attributes of an SUV with the practicality of a station wagon. But in many ways, it's something completely new. That, perhaps, explains the appeal of these vehicles to modern drivers, as well as the fact that crossovers simply meet the needs of drivers and their families.
Officially, Mercedes classifies the R350 as an SUV, though some are calling it a grand sports tourer. The 2007 model features such exterior elements as a silver grille with the Mercedes star firmly placed in the center, dual chrome exhaust tips, seven-spoke wheels, and color-keyed bumpers. It also has sporty styling, with a swept-back roofline that gives it a rakish appearance.
Power is provided by a 3.5-liter, double-overhead-cam V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower. It's linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission with a steering-column-mounted Direct Select shifter, which enables the driver to easily select gears. Also included is the Touch Shift feature, which enables drivers to manually upshift or downshift using rocker buttons on the steering wheel.
Inside, features include an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Bird's-Eye Maple wood trim, electronic cruise control, power windows, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Options include a sunroof and leather seats.
For entertainment and communcations, the R350 is equipped with a modular COMAND Cockpit Management and Data system that integrates an LCD screen, an eight-speaker AM/FM stereo system, and a CD player, as well as an optional six-disc CD changer with MP3 capabilities, a navigation system, and Sirius satellite radio.
Drivers give the R350 high marks for its uniqueness, as well as its handling, styling, comfort, and power. On the downside, some drivers noted the vehicle has blind spots out the back, while others noted it can be difficult to park because of its long wheel base.
