2007 Mercedes-Benz ML350

In a crowded field of mid-sized SUVs, the 2007 Mercedes-Benz ML350 remains a standout, thanks to an extensive redesign the previous year that resulted in a larger, more nimble, and more luxurious vehicle. In addition, the ML350 is one of the safest vehicles in its class, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which awarded the ML350 a five-star crash rating and a four-star rollover rating, both among the highest ratings for any SUV.

Power is provided by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 286 horsepower. It's linked to a seven-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with a Direct Select shifter mounted on the steering wheel.

The ML350 is equipped with Mercedes' 4MATIC permanent four-wheel drive. Other features include a driver-activated Downhill Speed Regulation feature that automatically adjusts the brakes and throttle to maintain a safe crawl speed when descending steep hills; a Hill-Start assist that prevents roll-back when starting from a stop on steep grades; and an off-road driving program, which enables the driver to automatically recalibrate the engine, transmission, traction system, and anti-lock brakes for off-road driving, all at the press of a single button.

Inside, standard features include eight-way power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, Bird's-eye Maple wood trim, dual-zone climate control, a multi-function steering wheel with audio system controls, power windows, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and electronic cruise control.

For entertainment and communcations, the ML350 is equipped with a modular COMAND Cockpit Management and Data system that integrates an LCD screen, an AM/FM stereo, and a CD player, as well as an optional six-disc CD changer with MP3 capabilities, a navigation system, and Sirius satellite radio.

Exterior features include a black and chrome grille with black ribs, color-keyed bumpers with a silver insert in the front, and color-keyed bodyside moldings and door handles. Heated power exterior mirrors, a hydraulically assisted tailgate, and 17-inch alloy wheels are also part of the package.

Drivers' reviews of the ML350 were generally positive, with the SUV's handling, roominess, braking, engine, and even gas mileage cited as among its positives. In addition, drivers noted that the vehicle was quiet and comfortable. However, a few drivers weren't impressed with the SUV's design, and some noted problems with the ML350's build quality and reliability.
