Nissan has made some serious performance changes to the 2007 Altima, in an effort to keep up with its Camry and Accord rivals.  The new 2007 Nissan Altima is sportier and more refined than previous models, and there is an all new hybrid version as well.
The 2007 Altima mid-size sedan comes in four trim levels -- base, S, SE, and SL.  The base and S feature a 2.5-liter, 175-hp 4-cylinder engine and a new 6-speed manual transmission.  New for 2007 is the 3.5-liter, 270-hp V6 engine in the SE and SL, the sportier versions of the Altima.  The manual is only available on the SE, while the SL features the Xtronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) for seamless shift, with a new Sport manumatic mode.  The CVT is optional on the SE and S as well, but not the base model.
A new D platform, which is more rigid thanks to the use of more steel, improves handling on the car.  The suspension is stiffer and shocks stronger.  The engine is mounted lower to improve the notorious torque steer problem.  The front and rear have been restyled, with a new grille and lights, and materials in the mid-sized sedan are more refined and durable.  There is also a few inches more legroom in the back.  Base models come standard with many power and convenience features, including the new Intelligent Key and push button ignition.  Sunroof, leather seats, and ABS are added with the V6 engines.  A new optional rearview camera is bundled with the navigation system.  Later in 2007, a new hybrid will be released, and its reported 41 mpg will put it ahead of all the competition.  It will have the 2.5 I4 at 158-hp, with a 40-hp electric motor.
So far, owners of the 2007 Altima have noticed its improved handling and road-hugging performance.  Gas mileage is a bonus, and the seamless CVT is also winning fans.  The sportier looks also get rated well.  On the downside are the light steering, a clunky manual, no standard ABS, and the fact that the V6 takes premium gas only.
