CarGurus' 2007 Lexus IS 250 Review

After a total redesign in 2006, the IS 250 received minimal updates for this year.  The IS series had been reinvented, and while maintaining its entry level price status, it was now equipped with many of the advanced features found in more expensive Lexus models.  An new option package, called X, was available for the rear wheel drive IS.  X offered a sport-tuned suspension.  The new IS also allowed drivers to deactivate stability and traction control systems, which were seen by many enthusiasts as a hinderance to performance.
The IS 250 featured the smaller engine option in the series, verses the 350's very powerful 3.5 liter V-6.  The 250's DOHC 32-valve 2.5 liter V-6 made 204 horsepower and provided 185 pound-feet of torque.  The engine was teamed with a six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic was available as an option.  The IS's performance was limited by the modest engine and its considerable weight for a small sedan, at 3500 pounds.  The 0-60 time was 7.9 seconds.  While the IS 250 was definitely not slow, its performance was mediocre compared to the German compact sedans.  The 350 was a different story.
Although acceleration was not breathtaking, drivers were very satisfied the the handling capabilities of the IS.  While many found that its steering could have been just a bit more responsive, the IS was very nimble and cornered incredibly well.  Ride quality had been significantly improved for the second generation, thanks in part to a more refined interior.  Owners often listed the front seat comfort as one of the car's best features, but room in the back seat is tight.
