Mercedes renamed many of its S-Class vehicles in the 1994 model year to decrease confusion and have the model numbers reflect the car's engine size. So the S-Class vehicle with the 5.0 liter engine that produced 316 horses became the S500, and a new legend was born.
While technically, the second tier automobile in the celebrated S-Class, the S500 was only a slight notch down from the more expensive S600. Outside of the name change, the only other changes for the 1994 model year were slightly improved fuel economy.
The S500 was available as both a coupe and a sedan. One coupe owner said the car could use "more power on the start: but that it was still "very solid and quick."
