In 1998 Mercedes-Benz re-badged the S500 coupes as CL500 to eliminate confusion with the benchmark sedan of the company's premier vehicle line-up. Otherwise, there were few changes from the previous model year for the ever-popular S500.

A 5.0 liter V8 engine powered the S500 to an astonishing 315 horsepower. Safety features included ABS, front and side airbags, Brake Assist, BabySmart child seat detection and ASR traction control.

"It feels like your driving a ship because its so smooth on the road," wrote one owner. Others loved the cars handling and acceleration, and praise for its comfort and passenger space was near unanimous.
