Buyers of the S320 had a choice between standard and long-wheelbase forms. That option continued to be offered in 1998, the fifth year of production for the entry-level vehicle to the elite S-Class.
Most of the changes to the 1998 S320 revolved around safety. Changes included the "Brake Assist" system, which automatically applied full braking force in panic stops, responding to rapid brake-pedal movement, and the "BabySmart" feature, which automatically deactivated front and side airbags when a special child seat was installed. An optional electronic stability control system was also available.
Some drivers grumbled about the high maintenance costs, but on the whole, owners liked the car and felt it was "reliable, with few problems."
