The Mercedes-Benz E320 remained virtually unchanged for 2002 (when compared to the previous year's model), but still had a lot to offer drivers who appreciated a smooth ride, responsive handling, and a wide range of luxury amenities. The mid-sized, rear-wheel-drive E320 was powered by a 3.2-liter V6 engine that produced 221 horsepower. The engine was linked to a five-speed automatic transmission equipped with the Touch Shift feature, which enabled the driver to upshift and downshift by nudging the shift lever left or right.
The E320 was available in both sedan and wagon versions, as well as models with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, which improved handling, stability, and traction in all types of driving conditions. The E320 was also equipped with the automaker's TeleAid emergency communication and assistance program, as well as the Electronic Stability Programming (ESP) anti-skid system.
Standard features for the E320 sedans and wagons included leather seats with power adjustment in the front, a two-zone automatic climate control system, dual front and side airbags, power windows, power exterior mirrors, cruise control, and an AM/FM audio system with a cassette player. A CD player was available as an option. Other options included a parking alert system, the COMAND navigation system, and a sunroof with a new one-touch opening feature.
Drivers found a lot to like about the E320, including its quiet engine, contemporary styling, accurate handling, and luxury features. However, some found the seats uncomfortable, and other drivers reported having a number of mechanical problems with the car.
