2004 marked the last year Mercedes-Benz's AMG unit built the S55 AMG with a 5.5 liter V8 engine, upgrading it to a 5.8 liter engine in the 2005 model year. But the 2004 model was nothing to sneeze at, offering 493 horses which pushed the 4,300 monster from zero to 60 in 4.6 seconds.
Drivers are also particularly fond of this model as it marked one of the last years that AMG's engines were hand built. The S55 AMG is built on the S550 platform and is one of the few cars in the AMG lineup built as a four-door sedan.
Complaints? The car may be a little too big, as the ride was a "little rough" for some drivers. And typical of some Mercedes' owners, too much technology might be a bad thing, as they were overwhelmed by the number of controls and found some of them - particularly those that operated the stereo - to be "fussy."
