The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG was a sleek, aerodynamic luxury coupe with engine and design modifications provided by AMG, the in-house performance tuner for Mercedes. Under the CL55's stylish hood was a supercharged, hand-assembled, all-aluminum 5.5-liter V8 engine that produced 493 horsepower. The engine was linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. Special 18-inch AMG wheels were also part of the package.
Traditionally, the Mercedes-Benz AMG models received all the carmaker's newest technology, and the 2005 CL55 AMG was no exception. An Active Body Control (ABC) stability system helped reduce body roll to ensure a comfortable yet sporty ride. Other cutting-edge technologies included bi-xenon high-intensity headlights, electrochromatic exterior and rear-view mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive cruise control, two-zone automatic climate control, a self-leveling suspension, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and traction control. A DVD-based navigation system was also standard equipment.
Inside, standard features included leather seats (heated in the front), a power-adjustable driver's seat with memory, power steering, a lighted entry system, power heated mirrors, a power sunroof, a trip computer, dual front and side airbags, and a premium audio system.
As expected, drivers heaped a lot of praised on the CL55, singling out its power as the car's most memorable feature. The smooth ride, responsive handling, and comfortable interior were also cited by drivers as positive points. On the downside, some drivers noted that the selector buttons on the car's audio and navigation systems were difficult to understand and operate.
