CarGurus' 2006 Pontiac GTO Review

The last year of a proposed three-year tryout, the 2006 Pontiac GTO two-door performance coupe offers few alterations. Already packed with a 6.0-liter, 400-hp V8 that gets up to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds, it receives updates to its console, instrument panel revisions, backlit audio controls on the steering wheel, and dark taillights.
Though some appreciate the more sophisticated European lines of the Australian-produced 2006 GTO, others wish it was more reminiscent of its muscle-car heritage. Two hood scoops, dual exhaust tips, and a subtle rear spoiler add a bit of sporty flash to the otherwise unremarkable design.  The 2006 GTO comes with few options other than a 6-speed manual in place of the standard 4-speed auto transmission. This is because it's well loaded with power features, leather upholstery and trim, cruise control, and air conditioning. ABS, traction, and front airbags are standard, but it has no side impact airbags. The instrument panel and fabric stitching sport the same color as the exterior.
Power is king in the 2006 Pontiac GTO, and it's why drivers love their car. The car also has solid handling, responsive braking, and quick off-the-line action. Highway mileage is great for its size, though city driving is not so good, and the ride can feel a little rough. Rear passenger room is ample, though hard to access. Engine noise is pleasing to the ear. Downsides include a tiny trunk, no folding seats, and complaints about the sound system and a front strut problem unique to the 2006 GTO. Although no plans were set to build this car beyond 2006, the GTO will supposedly come back with an all-new design for 2008.
