The 2006 Ford Fusion was launched as a replacement for the golden oldie Ford Taurus, long a favorite in the mid-sized family sedan market segment. The '06 Fusion isn't ever going to be anybody's dream muscle car, but for a vehicle at this price point, it provides an impressive degree of comfort and a smooth, easy-handling ride.
Under the hood, you'll find a 2.3 liter inline-4 engine with 160 horsepower; buyers looking for more oomph can upgrade to a 24-valve, double overhead cam 3.0 liter V6 Duratec (this one comes with variable valve timing, which translates to a healthy 221-horsepower max output). The 4-cylinder engine is offered with a choice of 5-speed manual transmission or an upgrade to automatic; the V-6 is available only as an automatic.
The back seat of the '06 Ford Fusion is roomy enough for adults, with reasonable headroom for a midsize car. The front seats are ergonomically designed, and reviewers describe them as very comfortable. The dashboard layout has gotten a lot of good press, as well, for its intuitive arrangement.
The 2006 Fusion is respectable in terms of fuel efficiency, with an estimated 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway. Word has it that a hybrid version of the Fusion is coming in the 2008 model year, so Ford may improve this dramatically.
