Technology worked for and against the 745 in 2003. In the minus column, it was the year BMW added iDrive to its 7-series cars, and most drivers found early versions of the Microsoft-designed program "annoying" at best. But in the plus column, BMW redesigned the 745's V8 engine, adding a feature called "Valvetronic" which eliminated the traditional throttle system and controlled speed by regulating the height of the engine valves - a truly revolutionary concept that was a hit from its inception.
The car is comfortable and luxurious, but also expensive: one driver called the $77,000 a "down payment," referring the high cost of dealer-based repairs given the complexity of the cars many integrated computer systems.
