By 2003, the BMW 540, like the rest of the 5 Series lineup, was showing its age, since six years had passed since its last full redesign. For many drivers, however, the 2003 540 is still worth owning, since it represents the last of the 5 Series vehicles before a redesign in 2004, and many preferred the old design to the new one.
For its last year on sale (until it is more than likely reintroduced into the lineup at some point in the future), the BMW 540 received a number of minor upgrades, including an optional Sport Package with 18-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded sport suspension, and revised body trim and instrument gauges.
Power for the 2003 BMW 540 was provided by a 4.4-liter V8 engine that produced 290 horsepower. It was available with either a five-speed automatic overdrive transmission or a six-speed manual transmission.
As befitting its position as the top-of-the-line 5 Series model, the 540 was loaded with luxury features, ranging from a state-of-the-art stereo system with a CD player to leather seats, wood interior trim, and a power sunroof.
Other standard features included dual-zone climate control, power windows, power heated exterior mirrors, a power-adjustable driver's seats, cruise control, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a leather-trimmed shift knob, power door locks, and an anti-theft alarm system.
Four-wheel anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, and Xenon high-intensity headlights were also part of the package. A DVD-based navigation system was among the options.
