CarGurus' 1999 BMW 318 Review

BMW phased out the 318 in the North American market in the 1999 model year, replacing the 1.9 liter four cylinder engine with a 2.5 liter engine and rechristening it the 323. The 318, however, remained a popular choice among car buyers in Europe and other parts of the world.

The car was built on the popular E46 engine platform and was part of BMW's three series. It was sold in Europe almost exclusively with a four speed, manual shifter, although some automatic models were built.

The car seemed to suffer with its discontinuation in the U.S. market, as users piled up lukewarm reviews on the 1999 BMW 318. "I found the (BMW) badge was really not that good," wrote one driver. "It did not have the grunt to keep up with faster rivals and was looked down on by faster 3 series."
