[Edit] For the first time since it got its new name in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma was totally redesigned for 2005. The new Tacoma was wider and longer, and a long-bed option was made available in response to consumer complains that the Tacoma’s bed was too short. The Tacoma also got more powerful engines and an overall exterior makeover.
The 2005 Toyota comes in a huge array of trims. Four body styles are available and include the standard cab with a long bed, the Access cab with a long bed, the Double Cab with a short bed, and a Double Cab with a long bed. The regular cab comes with very few options. The Access Cab and Double Cabs come as a 2WD, 4WD, or 4WD V6. Other trims include the PreRunner, which is a 2WD that is high off the ground like a 4WD, and the X Runner, which is a sport tuned Tacoma. The base engine is a 2.7-liter 164 horsepower four-cylinder, and the V6 has 4 liters and puts out 245 horsepower. Fuel economy is about 19/23 to 16/20, depending on the engine and configuration.
Toyota Tacoma fans like that the 2005 Tacoma got more room inside and a bigger bed on the outside. They also liked the more comfortable interior and improved quality of the dashboard and controls. Most complaints are about small, superficial issues, such as low-end upholstery and the inability to upgrade the stereo.
