2004 Subaru Legacy

With full-time AWD as its biggest selling point, the 2004 Legacy is unchanged this year, in preparation for a new generation in 2005.  Celebrating 35 years of Subaru, a 35th Anniversary Edition takes the place of the L Special Edition.  In addition to all that this trim offers (sunroof, foglights, leather wheel and wood trim), special badging, a 6-way power driver's seat, and 16-inch alloy wheels are included.  All trim levels are offered as a sedan or wagon, each with the 2.5-liter, 165-hp H4 engine and choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.  The base L is nicely equipped with power features, a CD player, and cruise control.  The sportier 2.5GT has a sport suspension, limited slip differential, larger front brakes, Sportshift mode with the auto tran, heated leather seats and mirrors, and a Momo steering wheel.  It also adds side impact bags to the standard dual front ones.  

Wagons are the most versatile of the 2004 Legacy lineup, offering up to 68 cubic feet of space and a roof rack.  The sedan's rear seats do not fold down, but feature a pass-through to the 12.4 cubic foot trunk.  Drivers wish the fold-down seats were standard in sedans, and they also want some V6 power in the 2004 Legacy.  Other complaints mention tight legroom for drivers and passengers, and bland styling compared to the rugged Outback.  Tight handling, a smooth ride, and the unflappable AWD are highlights.
