CarGurus' 2002 Audi A8 Review

The 2002 Audi A8 saw few major changes to its offerings.  Some new features included a Sport mode on the Tiptronic clutchless auto/manual transmission and a standard dash-installed 6-CD changer.  New options were a tire pressure monitor and an OnStar system.  Base and A8L models remained intact with the 4.2-liter, 310-hp V8 engine.  ABS brakes, traction control, electronic stability, and anti-skid were all standard.

The 2002 Audi A8 always gets high marks for its excellent handling and engine performance on the road.  The durable quattro all-wheel drive turns the sedan into a snowplow, making mincemeat of tough road conditions.  The full-size sedan drives more like a smaller and sportier car due to the combination of a powerful engine and light aluminum frame.  As always, the interior is perfect for stretching out on long rides, and features such as leather seats, front and rear climate control, rear lumbar support, window shades, and heated seats spoil anyone who rides in an Audi once.

Owners comment that their Audi A8 feels sportier than its plain, but stylish exterior looks, with responsive steering and good road grip.  The larger A8L is much appreciated for the extra room.  Heated steering wheel and seats are an extra bonus in the winter, along with the AWD.  Aside from the characteristic high repair costs and surly Audi dealers, other downsides to the 2002 A8 include the navigation system (set to be updated in the next generation) and only one cupholder up front.  Many owners wish that that the more performance-oriented S8 was available in the longer model.
