CarGurus' 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Review

The Mitsubishi Eclipse has been completely redesigned for 2000.  The sports coupe gains a V-6 engine and is now built upon the Gallant sedan platform.  Unfortunately, the turbo and AWD options have both been discontinued.

There are three trim levels for the Eclipse Coupe: RS, GS and GT.  All models come standard with alloy wheels, air conditioning, a CD audio system and powered accessories.

The RS and GS house a 2.4 liter four cylinder engine, which generates 154 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque.  Both engines can be paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, but the GS includes a manual shifter.  The GT is powered by a 3.0 liter V-6, which generates 205 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque.  Transmission options are the same.  Fuel economy is estimated at 23/31 mpg with the four cylinder and 20/28 mpg with the V-6.

The 2000 Eclipse earns high marks for acceleration, handling, and interior controls and comfort.  Test drivers recommend that the four cylinder engine be paired with the manual transmission, as the automatic unit is a bit sluggish.  The Eclipse cabin is still tight, very accommodating seats accommodate for the lack of room.  The controls are well placed and easy to manage.
