CarGurus' 2002 Mitsubishi Galant Review

The Mitsubishi Galant receives a face lift for the 2002 model year, highlighted by interior and exterior design changes, safety enhancements, and a few new features.  This model receives larger front ventilated disc brakes, a remote keyless entry trunk button, a new audio system setup, and a redesigned gauge cluster.

A sixth trim level has been added to the lineup this year.  Models now include the base DE, the adequately equipped ES, the upscale LS (four-cylinder), and the sport-focused GTZ.  The ES and LS models are also available with V-6 power plants.  The V-6 option also adds ABS and 16-inch tires.

The DE, ES and LS are powered by a 2.4 liter four cylinder engine, providing 145 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. The ES V-6, LS V-6 and GTZ models are all house a 3.0 liter V-6, which supplies 195 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is estimated at 21/28 mpg with the four and 20/27 mpg with the V-6. Both engines are mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

The Galant earns high marks for handling, ride quality and acceleration (with the V-6).  The GTZ's sport suspension and rigid chassis make for better negotiation of tight corners, but all Galants feature controlled and athletic road manners.  Engine and wind noise are more adequately dampened in this new model, and the interior controls are functional and well-placed.
