CarGurus' 2005 Mitsubishi Galant Review

A new mid-level trim has been added to the Mitsubishi Galant lineup for 2005.  The SE is powered by the four cylinder engine, but it receives a more upscale finish than the DE or the ES. All models now come standard with seat-mounted side airbags with head protection and rear floor heated ducts.  Interior accents on the GTS model has also been changed: a special Blackwood trim replaces the Metal Mesh and Birdseye wood options.

The Galant is available in five trim levels: DE, ES, SE, LS and GTS.  The DE, ES and SE all house the 2.4 liter inline four cylinder engine, which produces 160 horsepower and 157 pound-feet of torque.  A four-speed automatic is the only transmission option. Fuel economy is estimated at 23/30 mpg with this engine.  The LS and GTS get a 3.8 liter V-6, good for 230 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque.  The four-speed automatic transmission gets a manual shift feature on the V-6 models.  The V-6's EPA estimate is 19/27 mpg.

All models come standard with full power accessories, air conditioning, keyless entry, a CD player, cup holders and automatic-off headlights.  The new SE trim provides a more luxurious features package with the four cylinder engine.  Options are dependent on the trim trim, but include a sunroof, leather seating and a premium Infinity audio system.

The Galant has been praised by both owners and reviewers as a driver's car.  The sedan's top features include acceleration in V-6 models, handling, and ride quality.  The four cylinder models are quick enough, but the V-6 power will take the Galant from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.8 seconds. Testers report some traction loss at the initial takeoff.  All Galants are able to manage the road with considerable agility, but the sporty GTS gets a firmer suspension to further reduce body lean.

Unfortunately, the Galant is only available is only available with a four-speed automatic transmission.  This works to its disadvantage when compared with competitors like the Camry, Accord and Altima.  Many consumers also commented that some interior materials are low quality, and that storage and rear seat space are both limiting.
