The MINI Cooper lineup expanded in 2005 with the addition of two new convertible models. The MINI was available as a hardtop in both Standard and S (supercharged) trim packages, or as a convertible, also in both Standard and S versions.
The new convertible models featured a powered soft-top roof that resembled the hardtop roof when in place. It opened fully in just 15 seconds, or could be opened partially like a sunroof. When open, the roof stowed in a compartment above the trunk. The convertible top came with a heated rear glass window.
The 2005 MINI also received a minor styling update, with a new front grille, bumpers, headlights, and taillights.
The Standard MINI models (hardtop and convertible) were powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 115 horsepower, while the S models were equipped with a supercharged version of the same engine, producing 168 horsepower (up from 163 for the previous year).
The Standard models came with a five-speed manual transmission, while the S version received a new six-speed Getrag manual transmission with a steering-column-mounted tachometer. A continuously variable automatic transmission (also known as a CVT) was optional in the Standard models, while a six-speed automatic was optional in the S models.
The MINI Cooper was well-equipped with such standard features as air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, dual front and side airbags, an AM/FM stereo system with a CD player, remote keyless entry, and anti-lock brakes. The S versions received larger 16-inch tires (as opposed to 15-inch tires in the Standard model), as well as a hood scoop, traction control, and a sport suspension. Leather seats and a navigation system were among the options.
Drivers overwhelmingly thought the MINI Cooper was a fun car to drive, and that, along with the car's economy and cuteness factor, was the major reason cited for buying the car. The convertible, with its sunroof capability, was a big hit with drivers, though some thought the car (both hardtop and convertible versions) was a bit stiff over the road, with a ride that could be bumpy at times. Handling, stability, and reliability were other positive points cited by drivers.
