2010 Saturn Astra

Debuting as a 2008 model to replace the failed Ion, the Saturn Astra was rushed to market as little more than a re-badged Opel. True, Americans get fewer choices with regard to layout and engine options, but what is sent over the water is truly Opel. In fact, comparing the Saturn and Opel Astras side by side, the only differences you’ll see are a new grille, steering-wheel hub and wheel centers, graphics, a rear cupholder, and minor tuning for U.S. emissions standards.  

Available in three trim levels, the 3-door XR and the 3- and 5-door XE, all come with the same 1.8-liter Ecotec inline four-cylinder engine, producing 138 hp with the option of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, either of which will propel you from 0-60 in around 10 seconds.

Saturn skipped the 2009 model year for the Astra, but the 2010 will include an upgraded seven-speaker audio system made available for the XE, a new tan cloth interior, a new wheel cover design for the XE and two new colors, Polar White and Quicksilver.

With its European styling and handling, reviews have been positive from the Astra's debut year. Four-wheel discs and ABS provide better-than-average braking, and the McPherson struts up front and twist-beam rear axle are all fitted with premium shocks to provide excellent handling.

Some interesting technology has been utilized as well. To reduce drain on engine power, the rack-and-pinion steering’s hydraulic pump is powered by an electric motor, for instance. The Astra also makes use of “Neutral Idle” on its automatic-equipped cars. When depressing the brakes for more than two seconds at a stop, the transmission slips into neutral, and re-engages first fluidly upon release, apparently good for .2 mpg during city driving. The Astra's overall EPA rating is 24/32 mpg.

Features abound for a car in such an affordable price class, with traction control, standard OnStar, abundant airbags, electronic stability control, a tilt/telescope steering column, and rain-sensing wipers. Also, look for a $1,000 giant sunroof option, which will get you the most glass available above your head in the compact segment.
