[Edit] Always bet on black. These words from Wesley Snipes extend to Saab's brand-new sports sedan. With nods to the Saab 900, the limited edition 2008 Saab Turbo X represents the fastest performance car in the 9-3 lineup. With only 600 being produced, and only in jet black, the Turbo X features the cutting-edge combo of XWD (cross-wheel drive) and the new eLSD. This electronic rear limited-slip differential means the system can distribute torque not only between the front and rear wheels but also up to 40% between individual rear wheels. Taken as a package with the electronic throttle control, lowered ride height, stiffer sports suspension, and larger brakes, the 2008 Turbo X aims to enhance the overall driving experience and give the driver a greater feeling of control behind the wheel.
The 2008 Turbo X is no speed demon, but does deliver 280 hp and 295 ft-lbs of torque with its 2.8-liter twin turbo V6 and choice of 6-speed manual or automatic. This powertrain hits 0-60 in 5.7 seconds thanks to its lightweight aluminum materials. Available in either a Sport Sedan or SportCombi wagon, both trims feature a more aerodynamic body than the typical 9-3. A deeper front lip spoiler complements the large rear spoiler. Rhomboid dual exhaust and titanium exterior trim give the Turbo X a more distinctive look. Both sedan and wagon ride on 18-inch alloy wheels.
The style is carried over to the totally black interior. Leather seats, a perforated leather wheel, and carbon fiber trim class things up. The front sport seats bolster passengers, and a driver information center can be customized with personalized greetings. Power seats, a 6-CD changer, and a sunroof let you ride in luxury. A turbo booster gauge is a direct homage to the old 900 Turbo. ABS brakes and traction and stability control are all standard. Although some critics complain about the Turbo X's less-than-impressive horsepower, the overall handling and driver control nicely mimic those of European sport sedans.
