CarGurus' 2008 Ford E-Series Van Review

Ford's E-Series Van receives a significant makeover for the 2008 model year. The E-Series van is by far the best selling commercial vehicle in the United States, with Ford controlling about 50 percent of the market share in this segment, and it has held the top spot for nearly three decades. The all-new design for 2008 was largely inspired by the Super Duty F-Series pickups, with similarities found in the hood, fenders, grille, and bumpers.

Aside from aesthetics, chassis and suspension improvements bring an increase in the maximum gross vehicle weight rating, from 14,050 pounds to a class-leading 14,500 pounds. The E-150 Van can tow up to 7,500 pounds. Buyers may choose between the E-150 regular length and E-250 and E-350 regular- and extended-length models. The E-150 has 236.5 cubic feet of rear cargo space, but that jumps to 275.1 cubic feet in the extended versions. A sliding cargo door is optional.

There are also several new unique features for 2008, illustrating Ford's aim to remain at the top of the commercial heap. The new EconoCargo System adds a high-density polyethylene interior layer, which retains heat or cold and offers protection for cargo. A new Masterack work-bin rack system includes fully installed steel shelving, drawers, and cabinets. This work area is also accessible from the passenger quarters. Another variation of the Masterack is the QuietFlex Racks and Bins System, offering a quieter, more configurable storage solution.

Even the most modest E-Series van comes standard with a potent V8. The E-150 and E-250 house a 4.6-liter TRITON V8 engine. E-350 buyers may opt for a 6.8-liter TRITON V10, which generates 305 horsepower and 420 foot-pounds of torque. These numbers make the 350 the most powerful option in this class.
