What is the sun like star light, that comes on and off the dashboard on my Saturn ION 2004

its a shift light, thats when the vehicle thinks you should shift to get optimum fuel mileage

Looks like a gear with a plus sign inside...thats the up-shift light on manual transmission cars.

I have a Saturn Ion 2. It has a gear with a plus sign in the center icon on the control panel above the speedometer. What does it mean?
