how do i know when i need a tune up

Normal Service schedule for first tuneup is at 35,000 miles and then every 30,000 miles. On 6 cyl. change timing belt at 65,000 miles and then every 60,000 miles. With proper maintenance, there should not really be any "signs". A tuneup is a mantenance item. "Signs" usually indicate neglect.
