You are correct, there is no dipstick on this vehicle. On the right-hand (driver's side) of the engine, below the distributor cap, the transmission should be visible. On top of the trans is an allen-head bolt which serves as the transaxle fluid fill plug. Unplug this to check fluid level in the trans.

I have 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and ran into same problem. I have found the service plug but still can't find out what I'm supposed to see when I remove it. Love the car but it is service nightmare for owner maintenance.
