rear hatch door

Asked by gayhart Apr 17, 2010 at 10:13 PM about the 1997 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

door doesn't close tight. "door ajar" light and dome lights will not go off. I had to remove dome light bulbs. Is there an adjustment to the door ? Drivers side of rear door seems to be tight but passenger side of rear door is loose. It also rattles and makes the auto door locks not work.

Try taking some WD 40 or other spray lubricant and spray the door latches on the door. The swithc or sensor is in the latches. I have had similar problems with mine. Once you spray them, open and close a couple of times and respray if need be. Hopefully this will help.

Mine did the exact same thing. Best way is two replace the latch, either new or from a scrap yard. but the quick fix is simply to unplug the sensor. this will stop your lights and give you the locks back. its a few screws and plastic plugs to get the door skin off, then follow the wires to the inside of the latch, then unplug it from the latch.

sometimes it could be that the posts that engage the lock mechanism have worn , usually it is a steel post with a teflon sleeve , i used a piece of irrigation tubing and it solved the problem
