Check engine light.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light comes on shortly after starting. It runs a little rough when on but if it goes off, car runs much smoother. When at a stop light or stop sigh, initial take off must be slow or engine will quit. Runs normal if light is not on.

Take it to one of the auto parts stores that do the free OBD scan, they'll let you know what the trouble code is.

When i scanned mine it said "running to lean" which means the engine isint getting enough gas. The problem can be the fuel filter or fuel pump. I would start with the filter because there cheaper. If its the pump they will have to drop the fuel tank to get to it which could cost a couple hundred in labor but the pump is only about $75 on autopartswarehouse.com. If neither one of those works just search google for OBD2 code p0171 or p0174
