I am concered about placing a new columb in but not able to get the car into gear still not knowing if the columb sliiped or something else about the vehichle thanks

It sounds like there is a problem with the shifting linkage. You would probably need to remove the outer cover on the column to inspect the linkage. Looking under the dash may give you some clues as to what is going on.

theres a plastic clip 2-3 inches above your shifter, if you unclip it and put your key in it will shift again !
