My speedometer works sometime and rear of the car is making whiny noises. 1998 Mercury Sable

The speedometer problem could be caused by a number of things, like a broken/disconnected wire, or worn gear or sending unit, or even a bad wheel speed if the car has ABS brakes. The whining could be a bad wheel bearing in the rear end.
