What causes my 2005 to abruptly engage after a short delay when shifting into reverse?

Frequently I get a slight delay and then an abrupt engagement when I shift into reverse. Occasionally the same thing happens when shifting from reverse to forward. It seems to be more frequent when the vehicle is not warmed up.

Hope that you are just low on transmission fluid- check it- hope that it's not a worn transmission-
