No matter if you have an automatic or manual transmission, the top gear is overdrive. The rpm is is higher because its a small engine and needs more speed to power the car in wind and up and down grades. To improve highway mileage, fully inflate the tires to the maximum recommended pressure, check to see that the air filter is clean and that the engine is tuned and running well as designed.. Every 10 kph you go over 100 is going to lower your fuel mileage by 5-7 percent as well.
