Grinding noise coming from the rear.

Asked by CSTEWART Sep 05, 2010 at 12:27 AM about the 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My jeep liberty has been making a grinding noise coming from the rear. It only makes this noise when im making slower turns and seems to do it more often when I turn in reverse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

check your differential fluid. it might need changing. if it has been changed recently, did it need anti-slip fluid added? I know this was an issue with mine and we had to look at the original option sheet to find out if it needed it or not. Limited slip rear ends need the extra additive (expensive stuff too, like $10-15 a tube).

It could be the diff, but it could also be the brakes. The rear brakes on a Liberty, to my knowledge, are drum brakes. If it isn't the diff, have the adjusters in the drums looked at, or just the rear brakes in general. some brakes grind more in reverse. Wait, hold on, isn't a Liberty a front-wheel drive car? If it is, have the brakes and bearings serviced because there is no rear diff. I'm too lazy to look up the info.

I wonder if your parking brake works. I was checking out a friends SUV which made a similar sound. The parking brake was broken.

I just had my rear diff replaced (my whole rear end) because it locked up on the highway last summer. Now my Jeep is grinding like what is being described. Im going to have the fluid checked in the diff but I think its my rotors. Thoughts?

Also, this started after my water pump went out and I had that replaced. Im thinking the coolant that was shooting underneath the Jeep tore up something in the back.

Ok this may help on the jeep liberty like other vehicles with rotors all the way around the rear rotors has emergency brakes people change the disc brake pads but not the emergency brake pad when they go bad sometimes the brake shoe in there breaks apart and get cault between the rotor drum and shoe and starts rubbing you will need to remove the rotor it my have a flat lock washer on one of the lugs if its rusted it will take some doing with a hammer and WD40 to get it off and once off clean it and replace the emergency brake shoes then reassemble and then you're good to go.

That's easy, Aluminum heat shield on top of the muffler is loose or hanging down. As you turn it moves to the left and comes into contact with the axle which is grooved.
