What is the shelf under the hood on the drivers side near the fire wall for?

There seems to be a shelf under the hood , near the fire wall, on the drivers side, of a 2004 Jeep Wrangler X. It is triangular in shape, and looks like there are nuts attached to the underside of the shelf, so you can screw finger screws or bolts into the shelf from the top.... any ideas

may some kind of filter? or a storage comparment?then it could be a light inside it.take the top off and look inside.

Possibly an option not equipped on your vehicle or not available in your country more than likely.
