Are you asking how to engage it? Did you check your owner manual?

97 should have push button 4x4 capable of going from 2hi to 4hi at speeds up to 55mph and 4lo must be engaged while the gear selector is in nuetral at a stop or at a slow roll. Disengage the same way you engaged it

Yes how to engage it is not push button it has a shifter

operating the lever is the same as the push buttom but instead of pushing a button you move a lever
