2012 ford explorer exterior lights and interior lights won't turn off

Asked by tootired Apr 30, 2016 at 12:48 PM about the 2012 Ford Explorer Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 2012 Ford Explorer and when I park the
car and lock it the exterior lights and the interior
lights stay on but the only time the lights will turn
off is when I hit the dashboard with my fist and
then the exterior lights will turn off but the interior
lights still stay on when I say interior lights I don't
mean the dome lights I mean the panel lights I
took the car 2 Ford they held it a week and said
nothing was wrong I can't tell them that the only
way I can turn the lights off is if I hit the dash
because I'm afraid that I might lose my extended
warranty any help would be appreciated

Does it have an add on alarm or anything else tied into the lighting system? Ford has several bulletins out about splicing into the harness at the wrong places causing the headlamp switch to fail or relays to stick. By hitting the dash you could be causing a sticky relay or bad headlamp switch to open the circuit that's causing your lights to stay on.
