electrical whineing noise

Asked by Geezer65 Aug 23, 2013 at 07:08 AM about the 2001 Cadillac Eldorado ETC Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

radio off, fairly loud at idle, varies with rpm, consistent but seems less at higher rpm,s or driving above 40 or so. Almost goes away when radio is on and playing a Bob Segar song.  Please Help

going to suspect an alternator, but do think a worn belt tensioner bearing can make the belt swim to one side with mixed results...a whine is one of the tells- --have your mechanic put a new belt on and check the tensioner pulley for wear~

It still does it if it's Springsteen or Bob Dylan? Actually from what you describe it does sound like a belt or bearing, since it does it at idle and gets louder with higher rpm's Agreed, check belt tension and look to see if a pulley wobbles at idle or if you can wiggle a pulley side to side with engine off. And check your power steering fluid.

Is your Eldorado equipt with a factory BOSE radio? If it is the amp could be going bad.

Thanks so much for the input guys... sounds to me more electrical than mechanical.. pitch of whine changes with rpm and is loudest and most noticeable at idle..almost gone at 2000rpm. LoL it does seem to almost go away with Springsteen and Dylan too, if played above 80 decibels. Yes it is a factory Bose the feedback upon closer inspection with a mechanics stethoscope is coming through the drivers speaker, and is there ( no change) with radio off or on. another electrical whine (different) comes through same speaker when dash lights are faded down and that noise goes away at full brightness. So with this new info what do you think guys. alternaator, resister, ground, amp i would think off unless there is a stand by mode still powered up with radio off.

filtration of the12 volts that power the amplifier...someone has something out there....will have to go to a car stereo expert site to find one...they will be cheap~
