2011 Equinox Rough Idle/Stall After Dead Battery

Asked by Justin Mar 24, 2016 at 05:05 PM about the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox 1LT AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The other day my wife's equinox had a dead
battery after church. We tried to jump it off but it
now has a very rough idle and will stall. I replaced
the battery and I first was getting codes for the
catalytic converter. After resetting I got codes for
MAF sensor, TPS sensor, And Crankshaft sensor. I
had it towed to my house yesterday and cleaned
the throttle body and MAF sensor. Still will not stay
running and sounds horrible. Now the only code
showing is for.the crankshaft sensor. Any ideas?

Well I can't keep it running long enough to drive. The Chevy dealership said probably throttle body too. Just thought it was weird that it would all of a sudden quit. Thanks.

I replaced the throttle body and nothing changed. Do you have any other suggestions?

Justin I have a 2012 equinox and mine started out the same exact way! It’s been two years...3000 spent on this and that, but it is NEVER this or that! I noticed that everytime I had my oil changed the car would run better for a bit and then right around the time I would be due for an oil change it would gradually start back up with that rough idle, gnarly sound when cranking on, and sputtering. Long story short....EVERYBODY and their momma tells me oh it’s the throttle body, oh it’s the cam shaft position sensor. I can assure you it is not! The 2nd mechanic to work on it (had 40+ years of HIGHLY recommended experience) politely told me not to bring it back to him, he had legit done everything he could for it and he just didn’t know anymore. He told me he was squashing the remainder of my bill there and for me to take that money and go put it on a down payment for another car. The last mechanic that worked on it atleast got it to where it could be driven without given one’s self whiplash, however when it starts to rough idle, if I press my gas peddle (to keep the RPMs above 1), (foot on brake ofcourse)at a stoplight, drive thru, etc. the rough idle stops. This last mechanic I took it to (also experienced and highly respected) said it was because of a clogged valve (that may or may not be the right term) that is in the front by the engine somewhere (he showed me but I forgot the term) and all he needed to do was clean that out and it would be good to go. Charged me 99 bucks, got my car back, drove like a brand new car for about 3-4 months and slowly started with the rough idle again. Took it back, he cleaned it again, he said this time that apparently some of the original oil that was clogged had probably broken off and that after a couple more oil changes this should resolve itself. Fast forward 4 months....still rocking in the same ole boat with the rough idle. Also I should mention In my drawn out tale of woe is that if I let it idle long enough my stabilitrak light comes on, then my engine light and THEN last but not least it says “low engine power”. I then shut it off and sit patiently for about 5-7 min, crank it back up and everything is off except the engine light. It will go off within the next 24 hrs. Around the first of August I received papers in the mail from a group of lawyers out of NC and they basically state that my make, model, and year are included in a huge lawsuit someone has taken out against Chevy for knowing about this massive oil consumption issue (I burn atLEAST a quart of oil every 800-1000 miles and I have to get an oil change around every 2500 miles or it will just stall and cut off on me) and not issuing everyone who owns one of these a recall and fixing the problem. I almost threw the paperwork away until I was researching a fix for my car (as I randomly do just Incase I find something that worked for someone and in hopes of it working for me) and I saw where the lawsuit is legit. A couple days afterwards someone from the law group called me and asked if I was having or have had problems as described and I said yes and explained everything and they stopped me mid sentence and said no worries ma’am, there’s nothing you need to do, we will contact you when the hearing gets closer or it is resolved. I’m glad someone finally took action but it Still doesn’t fix my car today tho ya know!? I am literally driving this car as long as I can to get it paid off so I can trade it in. I have 3 months left. Sorry I don’t have a fix for you but maybe I ruled something out. Apologies for the length....that was the condensed version.

Hi. I have the exact problem with a car I bought from a used car dealership. What happened with the lawsuit here?
