Blue Exhaust Smoke A clear sign that oil is being burned in the engine is blue smoke coming from your vehicle’s tailpipe. Oil can leak past where it’s meant to be if piston rings or valve guise seals are worn out. This leaking can allow oil into the combustion chamber, where it will be burned like fuel. If you see what looks like blue smoke, be sure to check your oil often and be aware of possible overconsumption that may be occurring. While you should normally seek attention as soon as possible, since internal repairs may be the next step, an older vehicle with blue smoke may not be so crucial; as long as the leak is minimal it can be maintained by topping off your oil regularly.
