what is the AWD system ?

It happened to me about a month ago. It seems to be the problem of battery. We haven't started the car for a long time and when we tried to start the car, it said "Check AWD system" Then we started car with another battery - we got help from another car - and it started and fixed. I think it is caused because of battery. It might be died out.
